Extinction of a species and a people - Endangered

Many people are familiar with the idea of endangered animals, but few realize just how widespread the issue is. In Australia alone, there are currently 2,245 species listed as endangered. That’s thousands of unique animals and plants at risk of disappearing forever. In this artwork, I have chosen to represent these creatures in their simplest, most stripped-back form — as skeletons.
Much like the fossils we’ve found of dinosaurs, a skeleton tells only part of the story. Without muscles, skin, or other soft tissue, it can be incredibly difficult to imagine what the living creature once looked like. What colour was it? How did it move, behave, or interact with its environment? These are details lost when a species disappears.
This artwork invites the viewer to imagine a world where all we have left of our native animals are their bones. What would we know about them? What would we assume they looked like or how they lived? It’s a stark reminder of what extinction really means — not just the loss of a species, but the loss of identity, behaviour, and connection. The question becomes: will we act before these forms are all that’s left?
