Extinction of a species and a people - Megafauna

Did you know that since the beginning of white colonization, over 100 species have gone extinct in Australia alone? These extinctions were not natural — they were caused directly by human activity. Large-scale deforestation, the removal of native plant life, and the overhunting of animals disrupted fragile ecosystems beyond repair. Many unique species that once thrived in Australia’s diverse habitats were lost forever due to these changes.
However, the extinction of these creatures has not gone entirely unnoticed. Scientists have studied how and why these species disappeared, using that knowledge to help protect those that remain. Their research has become a crucial tool in conservation efforts across the continent.
But more needs to be done. Australia’s wildlife continues to face serious threats, and without immediate and sustained action, more species may follow the same path to extinction. By understanding the factors that contributed to past losses — including habitat destruction and invasive species — we can learn how to better protect vulnerable animals today. We can also use this knowledge to help endangered species recover and even bring some back from the brink. Protecting biodiversity is essential for a balanced, thriving planet.
