Taking A Piece Of Time Back
For Us
This is a series of acrylic on top of oil paintings; the oil paintings depict typical Australian scenes ( old farm homes, kids playing cricket in the street (all white children), stockmen on horses or old Queenslander homes). I've added some of my magic to them and dotted over the sky, background or wrapping around the trees.
I wanted this collection to really highlight the Stolen Generation and the impact that it's had on my people. It was a horrific time in Aboriginal History between 1910 and the 1970's, governments, churches and welfare bodies forcibly removed many Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander children from their families.
The forcible removal of First Nations children was based on assimilation policies, which claimed that the lives of the children would be improved if they became part of white society. Assimilation policies proposed that Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Peoples should be allowed to 'die out' through a process of natural elimination or if possible, assimilated into white society.
These oil paintings would usually depict your typical Australian landscapes by dotting the backgrounds or over the trees with vibrant dots, colourful lines & detailed animals it reminds the viewer that these scenes may look harmless and beautiful but underneath there is a dark and horrific past that was being hidden or pushed away from view. The meaning behind each piece is to stand up for my culture, show strength and take back a time that is hard for a lot of Aboriginal people to think of.
These pieces make me feel strong & proud and I hope the viewer can feel that when they look over them.
