Gurraagay ’Possum’ Dreaming

The dilly bag is woven from a single continuous piece of Kurrajong string, demonstrating the skill, patience, and cultural responsibility involved in maintaining these traditional practices. The use of natural fibres, native animal materials, and traditional techniques reflects the deep and ongoing relationship between Gumbaynggirr people, our Country, and our Ancestors.

These works are far more than functional objects; they are vessels of cultural knowledge and ancestral memory, preserving the teachings, practices, and stories of my people. Through my weaving, I honor the strength and resilience of my Elders, and I am committed to passing this knowledge on to the next generation. My work exists as a continuation of our living culture, ensuring that the practices of the past remain strong and visible within our communities today and into the future.

Renika's traditional dilly bags are created using fibre from the Kurrajong tree, which is harvested during the winter months. The preparation of Kurrajong fiber is a careful and patient process, taking up to six months to complete. This process reflects not only practical skill but also respect for the knowledge passed down through generations, ensuring the fibres are strong, durable, and ready to be woven into functional and meaningful cultural pieces.

Gurraagay ’Possum’ Dreaming dilly bag features possum fur, a material of great cultural importance to our people. Possum fur has long been used by Gumbaynggirr people for warmth, protection, and ceremonial purposes, and it carries with its stories of survival, care, and respect for the animals and the land.
