This artwork addresses the ongoing coal mining activities in Blackwater, QLD. It portrays the melting of the earth, with the sun drying out the layers over the years, creating canyon-like formations where water resides. This man-made phenomenon is not naturally occurring and can be devastating to the waterways of my home country.

Artists Bio

Her passion and influence comes from both her auntie’s stories and her faith:

“My Aunties communicated our history and family connections through art and stories that have been handed down to me through the generations. I have vivid memories of gathering with my community on sacred land, dancing, sleeping, creating arts and crafts, sitting around a campfire and listening to my Elders."

Verqelle has now moved to Birpai Country with her children more than 10 years ago and this new life has had a major influence on her art.
