Community Canvas with Josie Rose

Local Gumbaynggirr artist Josie Rose facilitated work on a huge canvas as part of our Cultural Revival Gathering month.

We welcomed ABCARE Elders, community members, and local school children to The Gallery to help paint a huge community canvas that will hang in The Gallery once the dust has settled from the renovation work.

Josie worked with visitors in The Gallery to contribute to this piece. The artwork represents Fire Wisdom using the Kelly family totem of fire to create the story.

Josie celebrates ‘Keep the Fires Burning’ 2024 NAIDOC theme in honour of her grandparents Tom and Sarah Flanders passing down the totem of fire ‘waagay’ to their clan and future descendants.

SWFW is grateful to Josie Rose for her creative direction on this very special piece.

This National NAIDOC Week Activity was funded by the National Indigenous Australians Agency.
