Collection: Tyler Stackman

Tyler Stackman-Green is a proud Thunghutti/Dunghutti man from Walcha, Thunghutti Barri Country. Tyler has connections to Kamilaroi/Gamilaraay.

I was born in Walcha, my Biyang (father’s) country. I’m a descendant of the Thunghutti people, those who walked the gorge country for tens of thousands of years. I also have blood connections to the Kamilaroi/Gamilaraay people through my grandmother. And Celtic heritage through my mother.
Artwork has been apart of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up I would listen to my biyang talk with pride about the Thunghutti people, this made me want to depict what he would tell me in my own way, I would always seek advice from my father in all aspects of culture, especially my art.
My artwork consists of several different styles and mediums, from the more traditional styles to the more contemporary ones. I started out drawing as a kid, then quickly moved over to painting, woodworking and pyrography, emu egg carving (Kalti Paarti), pyrography on kangaroo skins and cloaks, and digital artworks,
It’s hard for me to not create something, it all started as a way to cope with racism and bullying, being born to a mixed race family I would be subject to racism all my school life and the majority of my adult life. But my artwork is a way for me to express my pride in my culture and silence those who try to bring me down. This instantly turned into a passion to teach my art and cultural practices to anyone who is willing to learn.

(My name is Tyler, I’m a Thunghutti man from Walcha, the mountain country)
